The New Americana

September 16, 2016

With the Fashion Week just around the corner (London - started today, Milan and Paris), you're probably wondering what the latest trends for the next spring are.
At NYFW (New York Fashion Week) the designers proposed some really interesting ones. But today I'm going to talk about a major trend for SS17, as seen throughout the resort collections -  Altuzarra, Belstaff, Edun, Erika Cavallini, I'm Isola Marras, Johanna Ortiz etc. but also at Coach at this edition of NYFW: the New Americana. Think about a fusion between the Wild West (Coast) and East Coast, inspired by the 20th century aesthetics.

I'm mentioning Coach because I feel their contribution to the next season will be major: varsity jackets, tougher and more embellished than ever, covered with handfuls of studs, fringing galore, and all manner of charms and embroidery, which fed into the quirky, hand-hewn aesthetic of last season. The creative director has a self-confessed obsession with classic Americana, and it’s not surprising that Elvis showed up in his psychobilly mix. The chunky medallions, oversized creepers and miniature handbags clearly show Elvis’ influence. Our next summer shall be a continuous festival! Definitely my favourite trend from NYFW.

My take on the trend? Keeping it simple during the day with an 80's inspired deconstructed t-shirt, a button up corduroy a-line skirt from SammyDress, my super fringed bag and to keep it simple, a pair of pointy, leather mules.

For an American inspired vibe, I recommend watching:

Stranger Things (in case you haven't yet) -for  their 80's Americana fashion at its best
Todd Solondz's movies (dark, thought-provoking, socially conscious satires)

Until next time!

Love,

Carla
