Why You Shouldn't (Fake) Smile

November 21, 2017

I've heard it many times in my life, from many people: I should smile more. Why? Why should I smile?

smile
smʌɪl
verb
  1. 1
form one's features into a pleased, kind, or amused expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up and the front teeth exposed.

Apparently, it makes you look younger, thinner, it creates a sense of well-being, it boosts your mood, it makes you likeable and competent, smiling is contagious.

What if forced smiling stands against all my principles? I don't want to look younger, I can diet if I need to look skinnier, "a sense" of well-being sounds pretty fake to me as smiling it's not actually equal to well-being, but used by many to hide their true intentions, emotions and thoughts. This fake smile I am talking about, used in every day life by anybody from sales assistants to actors, is a mask. Why do you need it? To become everything you're not. Throughout my life, the more smiley a person was, the more I disliked him/her. Don't get me wrong, I love smiling and laughing with my whole heart and face -  when I really feel like it. But pretending to be super happy and smiley at all times, while your eyes betray sadness, discomfort and frustration...that's just as fake as Kim K's bum. It's pointless and stupid, nobody needs it. When your employers tell you to smile more, tell them to f*ck off. At least that's what I did. We're on this Earth and only have one life so I might as well live it by being happy with myself, expressing my emotions whenever I really feel like, living by my principles, staying honest and true to myself. Being myself. If being yourself is not allowed, if being yourself is made fun of, if being yourself is criticised, then do what you must in order to be who you truly are. No compromises.

Smile when you feel like, cry when you need to, say 'I love you' when you mean it. Honestly, our existence here is so short and fragile, we might as well live life by our own rules (as long as they don't go against the laws of nature of course), stay true to our emotions and feelings and never do stuff just for the sake of others. You are cool the way you are, you are loved by those who know your soul, you are perfect just the way you are, happy or sad, angry, crazy or depressed, fat or skinny, short or tall. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
